Haiku round-up: Week of January 8
The second week of the year was kitten-focused: I continued to be obsessed with my own two cats, Phoebe and Louise (the stare mentioned in the first poem here is Louise’s, a tiny silent demand to be fed), and I also fell in love with a couple of new tinies, one of whom (Susan!) my close friends ended up adopting.
A new Waxahatchee single, “Right Back to It,” also completely captured my attention, along with its music video, which is calming and beautiful—please go watch it if you have a minute.
January 8
Your expectant stare,
piercing from the other room
Almost time to eat
January 9
Yard briefly a pond,
street costumed as swift river
Sky holds nothing back
January 10
A speckled belly,
timid curiosity,
many future purrs
January 11
A heron gliding
beside a smooth, silent boat
You on board, singing
January 12
The bath isn’t hot
so you bring boiling kettles
and fix it for me
January 13
The simplest spring toy
keeps a kitten occupied
for a whole evening
January 14
Rows of dough pillows,
awaiting dark chocolate’s
delicious piercing
